Stonefields

The 5.3 hectare wetland area, comprising of three lakes and surrounding wetland zones, is a central attraction for both visitors and residents. It has three main roles:
  • The wetland zone is a pedestrian only area, enhancing the natural environment and providing an interesting and sheltered place for people to run, walk, picnic or just relax
  • The wetland will provide a thriving natural ecosystem with plants that will draw native local bird life, such as the rare NZ Scaup (duck)
  • Stormwater catchment ponds provide vital filtration and reticulation to the nearby Waiatarua Reserve
The wetland area protects and encourage native plant species, such as the Willowherb, which is rare to Auckland and is being protected and encouraged at Stonefields.

The wetland area will offer an educational focus through winding heritage trails and placards highlighting historical features and natural life, while the observational walkways will offer panoramic views across Stonefields.

The wetland opened to the public in 2011.
