The 53,000 square metre wetland area, comprising of three lakes and surrounding wetland zones, will be a central attraction for both visitors and residents. It will have three main roles:
- The wetland zone will be a pedestrian only area, enhancing the natural environment and providing an interesting and sheltered place for people to run, walk, picnic or just relax
- The wetland will provide a thriving natural ecosystem with plants that will draw native local bird life, such as the rare NZ Scaup (duck)
- Stormwater catchment ponds will provide vital filtration and reticulation to the nearby Waiatarua Reserve
The wetland area will protect and encourage native plant species, such as the Willowherb, which is rare to Auckland and is being protected and encouraged at Stonefields.
The wetland parks will offer an educational focus through winding heritage trails and placards highlighting historical features and natural life, while the observational walkways will offer panoramic views across Stonefields.
The wetlands will be completed by the end of the first quarter 2010.
