New Road Leads Into Stonefields

The next step forward has been taken in the creation of Stonefields, with the completion of a new road, roundabout and traffic intersection leading into the new high quality residential community that is transforming the 110 hectare site of the former Winstone’s quarry. The new road will be opened in stages. The first stage to be handed over comprises:
  • A new roundabout at the junction of College Road and Merton Road
  • A new road (the renamed College Road) leading from the roundabout to a traffic light intersection c.300m into the site
  • A new traffic light intersection connecting this new road to the realignment of College Road at c.Norman Lessor Drive. From the traffic light intersection down to the roundabout joining Lunn Avenue, this new road layout will be called Ngahue Drive.
The new road into Stonefields will be lined with trees. New Zealand Kauri, Titoki, Nikau Palms, Magnolia and Queensland Kauri planted along the roadsides, down the central median strip and within the roundabout. Several thousand Tanika grass plants and Mountain Flax will also be planted, to provide ground cover on the median and under roadside trees.

Andrew Stringer, General Manager of Landco Land Developments, said: “This is another step to creating an attractive community at Stonefields. Our road work will improve the flow and safety of local traffic, particularly along College Road and for people wanting to turn right from Merton Road up to St. Johns. We are grateful to local residents and other road users, who have been patient and understanding while we carried out the work.”

Temporary diversions around the construction of a new roundabout at the current junction of Merton Road and College Road have been in place since the beginning of March. The next step in the delivery of road access will include handing over a 640m length of road – now to be known as College Road - from the new traffic light intersection down to the main town centre junction, next to Auckland Netball, plus a link from Morrin Road down to this intersection. These will likely be handed over during the next few months, once they have been vested to council.

What this means for the old College Road:
A 300 metre section of College Road has now been permanently cordoned off to allow for the new road layout.

This old section of road will become part of the new community, with residential subdivision to take place down to the new intersection.
