FORMER MAYOR OPENS ROAD INTO STONEFIELDS

Former Auckland City Mayor Dick Hubbard opened the new main road leading into Stonefields, the new, high quality community transforming the 110 hectare site of the former Winstone’s quarry at Mt Wellington.  The new road, which is the continuation of College Road, is the latest step in the creation of Stonefields and follows the completion of the College Road / Merton Road roundabout and Ngahue Drive intersection in April.

The new portion of College Road extends 640m from the intersection which has been in operation since April 2007. It links up with the newly built Stonefields Avenue, which in turn connects with Morrin Road. The new College Road extension will feature a planted median strip, intersections and roundabouts along its length to enhance traffic flows into the community.

New Road Names at Stonefields:

New Zealand Kauri, Titoki, Nikau, Magnolia and Queensland Kauri have been planted along the roadsides, down the central median strip and within the roundabout. Several thousand Tanika grass plants and Mountain Flax have also been planted to provide ground cover. This is all part of a comprehensive landscaping plan that will see thousands of trees planted within the community.

The Former Mayor said: “The road opening is an important milestone for this exciting development. As each week goes by, it become clearer just how significant Stonefields is becoming to the area. We can now begin to appreciate the benefits of a well-planned urban community, providing homes and top amenities to one of our most important growth areas.”

Andrew Stringer, General Manager of Landco Land Developments, the company that is creating Stonefields, said: “This is a great step forward: the latest step in creating an attractive community at Stonefields. This new local road will improve connectivity into the area, provide a whole new viewpoint into the community and easy access from Stonefields to all points of the city. Anyone driving along this new road will be able to see how much work we are doing to transform the area into a high quality residential community.”

Andrew continues: “Stonefields has at its heart a design philosophy that enhances pedestrianisation, includes a cycling network and has a cohesive and well thought-through public transport network. As part of this, we have been working constructively with ARTA and are confident that bus services will be in place as the first residents move in. These collective initiatives will lessen the reliance on private motor vehicles for the Stonefields community and we very much hope that they provide a benchmark for future communities in Auckland.”

The new road now also provides a new access route into Auckland Netball’s facility.

Fletcher Living has now also begun to build the first foundations for the 160 new houses that will be built at Stonefields over the next year.
