How is Stonefields an example of sustainable design?
- Considerable thought has been given to this important topic. Some examples of our approach include:
- A significant portion of the roading materials used within Stonefields has been sourced from the site, taking advantage of its former quarry use. This has minimised truck movements outside of the project area, and provided excellent re-use of high quality materials.
- The Stonefields community features a ‘third pipe’ water system that allows us to conserve non-potable water resources by collecting and re-using stormwater within the community. This system, which is relatively new to New Zealand, re-uses stormwater to water gardens and to flush toilets.
- The use of sustainable on-site materials, such as bluestone, forms a major element of the landscape strategy within the community. Used in a natural way around the lake as feature boulders and accents, and feeding out into the community, Bluestone has been used in retaining and walls, and will be used in refined paving and detailing within the town centre.
- Roofing materials containing copper and zinc are not permitted within the community
- Timber boardwalks and wharfs will be used around the lake and wetland zones; and combinations of timber and stone will be used to create varied street furniture.
- Thousands of native and exotic plants form connections between the many distinct areas of this vast area: from the natural lake edges to the many green spaces and on to the highly refined and sophisticated environment of the town centre.
Will the lake be kept, or will it go?
